Worker compensation insurance or workman’s comp insurance, is a type of insurance coverage for businesses if one (or more) of their employees suffers a work-related injury or illness. This type of coverage serves two functions:
The first is compensation insurance for workers when they require medical care and time off work for their workplace injury or illness. This ensures their necessary medical bills are covered and compensates them for missed wages while they are recovering.
The second function is liability coverage. When your employees agree to the workers’ comp coverage, they are also agreeing to waive their right to sue your company as a result of their workplace injury. -
Generally, the workers' comp insurance process works as follows:
- After the incident, the employee must communicate with HR about their injury or illness so an official report can be filed.
- The employee will then need to see a doctor, who will fill out a medical report and send it to the employer.
- The employee or their employer will then officially file a workers’ comp claim with their insurance.
- Once the claim is processed and approved, the employee will receive their workers’ comp benefits, such as wage replacement and coverage for medical bills.
